C-Reactive Protein Complement Test and Lupus

Imagine a series of dominos, lined up in a row. Except, in this case, when the last domino falls, it kills bacteria and viruses invading the body. In this analogy, the dominos are a series of over 15 different proteins called C-reactive proteins. The chain reaction they create in the body is essential to how our bodies protect themselves from invaders. However, in autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the dominos are turned against the body. The push that sends the dominos tumbling down are a person’s own cells.
